What Are Enzyme-Based Cleaners?
Several stain- and odor-removing cleaning products are available today that are advertised as “enzyme-based”. They are considered some of the most effective products for the removal of stains and odors caused by organic material, such as urine, grass, blood, or the like. However, many consumers are skeptical of such claims. How can a single solution remove so many different kinds of stains? The answer lies in the nature of enzymes. Most people are only vaguely familiar with the concept of an enzyme. Here is a short explanation of what an enzyme is, and how they work to remove stains and odors.
An enzyme is simply a protein molecule that, in the presence of other chemicals, “catalyzes” (speeds up) chemical reactions. By lowering the “activation energy” required for a reaction to take place, in many cases to millions of times lower than normal, chemical processes that would normally happen too slowly to be of value are able to take place very quickly. A useful way to think about this idea is to compare it to how water boils at a lower temperature at higher altitudes. At sea level, you have to heat water to 100 degrees Celsius to make it boil- but in Denver, Colorado, the lower air pressure decreases the boiling point of water to 95 degrees. There is less “resistance” to the reaction- the change from liquid to gas- because of the lower air pressure. Enzymes work similarly, changing the conditions around the chemicals to reduce the amount of energy needed for a reaction to take place.
This is important for living things, including humans. Most of the chemical processes that our bodies need to survive would normally take much too long to be useful to us. It’s only because of enzymes that we are able to digest our food in a matter of hours, rather than months or years. In fact, people who are lactose intolerance are actually suffering from a shortage of lactase- the enzyme that breaks down the lactose protein found in milk. Enzymes are also necessary for the chemical reaction that turns stored energy in our bodies into the muscle contractions that let us move around. Our bodies contain thousands of different kinds of enzymes, each of which influences a different chemical reaction.
“This is all fascinating”, you say, “but what does this have to do with getting wine stains out of my carpet?” The answer is that breaking up a stain is a chemical process, just like digesting milk. Regular cleaning products such as dish soap are “surfactants”, meaning that they allow water and oils to mix. This allows grease to dissolve into water, and wash away. Unfortunately, this is useless for removing many types of unwanted material- especially uric acid crystals. These tiny crystals, found in urine, are the reason pet urine stains carpets and retain their unpleasant smell. Surfactant cleaners are unable to break the chemical bonds that bind such crystals to the stained surface. Enzymatic cleaners, on the other hand, jumpstart the breaking down process of the chemical bonds in the stain. It’s as if time were sped up many thousands or millions of times over for the stain, causing it to degrade “naturally” in a matter of minutes or hours.
Enzyme-based cleaners are not suitable for all purposes, however. They are only recommended for use on organic stains. For our purposes, that simply means a stain caused by some natural, biological material- if it came out of an animal or plant, it’s organic. This would include feces, urine, blood, vomit, chocolate, coffee, even cigarette smoke. Stains from engine oil, though, would benefit more from the use of a surfactant- like laundry detergent- than from an enzyme-based cleaner.
Apart from concerns of effectiveness, many consumers prefer enzyme-based cleaners because they have a much lower environmental impact as compared to typical cleaning products. Conventional cleaners contain bleach, ammonia, hydrochloric acid, and other extremely toxic, corrosive chemicals. These artificially-created chemicals tend not to break down on their own, and hang around in our environment- or your home- long after you use them. Although they are widely sold and used, there is growing evidence that the high amounts of these chemicals have serious impacts on our health, and the quality of our water and air. The enzymes found in cleaners, on the other hand, have no notable impact on living beings and do not accumulate in our air and waterways. There is no need to keep children or pets away from areas that have been treated with enzymatic cleaners, as one would with a corrosive chemical cleaner, making them safer and more convenient for many users.
So, now that you know the science behind enzyme-based cleaners, you may decide to try one out for yourself. Many consumers have had very positive results from such cleaners in removing stains from pets, beverage spills, and other messes. Despite the complex chemistry behind such products, they are actually quite idiot-proof, as they simply need to be poured onto the stain and left to do their work. We encourage you to try out this safe, ecologically sound, and effective stain and odor treatment for yourself.
What’s the Best Mattress for Heavy People?
In my 35 years within the mattress industry I have seen mattresses get destroyed by heavy people. Is it their fault? No, it’s the fault of the manufacturers for not making sturdy mattresses to accommodate a larger person. Seems comfort trumps durability in the mattress world so the best mattress for heavy people is one that is rock hard and not comfortable, or is it?
For years the only type of mattress that could hold up to a heavy person was a spring mattress that had extra firm coils and extra firm padding making it unbearable to sleep on. However, the best mattress for heavy people is not made of steel springs nor memory foam, but rather a product of Mother Nature herself, rubber.
Latex foam rubber is made from tree sap (milk) from the rubber trees found mostly in Malaysia, Sri Lanka and India. Latex mattresses have been around for decades and their durability is legendary. I have personally seen these mattresses exceed 50 years of use. What makes them the best mattress for heavy people is the density of this amazing product. For example, most quality sofa cushions are made using 1.8 lb polyfoam. As you know these cushions usually last between 5 and 10 years before starting to collapse. Just imagine how long a foam that was 2 ½ times heavier would perform in the long haul and you have the reason why latex is so durable.
Ok, so now it’s no secret why latex can outlast any other product but what about the comfort? Does the best mattress for heavy people need to be rock hard like a spring mattress? No, latex mattresses offer BOTH comfort and durability coming in a variety of firmness levels. Some manufacturers even offer different firmness levels for each half of the bed so if a heavy person is partnered with a much lighter person, each can have their own choice. Try getting that from a spring or memory foam bed.
What’s the Best Mattress For Heavy People in Latex Choices?
This is a question I get asked often. Since there are two types of processes for latex, Dunlop and Talalay, each has its own unique properties. Dunlop latex is denser and makes it the most popular choice for back sleepers who are heavy. Talalay latex is less dense and more airy making it a better choice for lighter folks and those who like to sleep on their side. Talalay does come in firmer densities as well and can be tailored for a heavy person who also likes to sleep on their side. The talalay process with be the best option if getting a mattress with different firmnesses fits your needs.
In conclusion let me just say that I am sick and tired of talking to folks who tell me their new mattress only lasted 6 months and now they can’t return it or they can only exchange it for another one of the same model which will do exactly the same thing over and over. Nonsense, save yourself the frustration and just go out and buy the best mattress for heavy people in the first place, a latex mattress.
7 Compelling Reasons Not To Discount

If you are selling a service and you only have your personal time to sell, one hundred hours is one hundred hours–and the amount of discounts you give to customers can make the difference between a profitable year, or not.
Unfortunately, discounting as a business practice is so entrenched that I probably don’t need to help you recreate the arguments that justify it.
The dictionary describes the effect well: ‘to deduct from the amount, cost; to disregard; to make less effective by anticipation.’
Before you succumb to the temptation to win new business by offering a discount take a moment to consider these seven problems associated with discounting:
Negotiations over discounts, focuses attention on price–as if that were all that matters. If your only competitive advantage is price, you are in trouble, because price can always be matched.
Discounting starts price wars. The company that usually wins is the one with the biggest balance sheet–the one who can afford to hold out the longest.
Discounting can affect the customer perception of your service. The less they pay, quite likely the less they will value it.
Discounting will affect your profit margins. Consider what would happen if all your competitors met your discounted price–do you think your customer is going to accept any less quality?
Discounting may affect the quality of your service. Yet, if you compromise the quality of what you sell, you risk disappointing customers and you may lose repeat business, and lose credibility or gain a bad reputation, or end up spending time fixing complaints. One way or another today’s discounts could rob you of future business, and profits.
Discounting may lead to ‘stockpiling’ where customers purchase more than they need while the price is cheap. This will affect demand and potential profits in the future.
Habitual discounting can become psychologically disempowering. A reduced price can be a short-sighted ‘quick fix’ that reduces business growth in the long run. Before you discount, stop and think: Is this the only way to give value?
Be mindful when you’re offering a discount. Why are you doing it? Is it an investment, and will it net you a greater financial return in the future? Or is it something you do all the time, a thinly disguised (yet noble!) excuse for not charging your worth?
Are you offering a discount as the ‘lazy way out’–instead of making the effort to explain or demonstrate your value? One of the basic rules of negotiating is that if you are going to offer a discount, you offer a different product or service. Perhaps negotiate different terms, or a shorter guarantee, or longer lead times. Challenge your customer’s proposition for a discount with: “If you want a better price, give me a better order.”
How to Repair Your Lazyboy Recliner
Lazyboy recliners have a worldwide reputation for comfort, style, durability and quality. However, as in all furniture, everyday use (and misuse) can wear your favorite, overused chair out. Even if you swore by taking care and maintaining your Lazyboy, time will come when your recliner will need professional repair and maintenance.
When your Lazyboy recliner starts to fail you, it is very important that you promptly attend to it and have it checked as soon as possible. Just leaving it as is, and assuming that it will not worsen, can lead your chair prone to more damage. As you know, more damage means more repair costs.
When this happens, how do you get your Lazyboy recliner repaired? Below are some useful tips.
Check the warranty coverage.
If you have just recently bought your Lazyboy brand new, your recliner may still be entitled to a warranty. Most Lazyboy recliners have limited lifetime warranty on many mechanisms and certain parts, while most other parts are covered for at least a year for repair and service. If your recliner acts up and it is not your fault, you can have it repaired for free under the warranty conditions. Bear in mind though that this warranty is not covered if your recliner was damaged due to improper handling, and if it shows signs of abnormal use such as excessive soiling. Moreover, the warranty does not pay for freight charges for transport and handling.
Consult with your dealer.
If your warranty coverage is expired, your next option is to contact your dealer or the furniture shop where you bought your Lazyboy recliner from. If you have bought your recliner from a reliable authorized Lazyboy dealer, they should be able to assist you with your repair needs. They will surely have the experience in recliner repair and would know what to suggest. They might even have in house repair staff that can do the repairs for you. If your original dealer is inaccessible, you can check for nearby authorized dealers. You can check out the Lazyboy website for a list of local dealers in your area.
Contact your local repairman.
If your warranty has expired, or if the repairs to be done are not covered by the warranty, you will shoulder all the repair costs. Repair costs are generally heavy on the pocket, so you might find it more affordable to ask the help of your local repairman. Find a repairman who already had experience in repairing recliners. Should the repair need spare parts, your local repairman should be able to assist you in finding them. Ask around for recommendations for a good repairman in your area.
Check your manual.
There are simple Lazyboy problems that you can fix yourself, and they are all listed in the manual that came with your purchase. The manual also gives you tips and suggestions for taking care of your Lazyboy recliner. But, never try to do it yourself if the repairs needs professional handling to do. A recliner is not a wooden chair so unless you know its intricate details, ask for the help of someone who does.
Chair Arm Covers – Armed and Dangerous
Chairs can get dinged up and destroyed just from everyday use. In order to protect a chair’s arms it is necessary to have chair arm covers. These covers can be used for protection but also add a hint of elegance to the furnishing. Utilizing covers is a lot like utilizing gloves, you can live without them but at what cost?
Think back to the chairs you have or have sat on, have any of those ever had a lost arm cover or had damage to the arms? Depending on where you have been the answer to that question is more than likely yes. The question is what can be done about it?
By using chair arm covers you can definitely protect the product and add (depending on what covers you choose) an almost unlimited amount of style. Chair can get beat up very quickly especially if they are used for more than just decoration. In any home or office it is vital that this part of furniture look its best at all times.
A first opinion of a chair is going to be all about the looks of it. Does it match the office? Is it worn out? Does it have scratches or scraps on the arms? Do not let the answer to any of these questions be yes about your chairs.
The amount of options when deciding how to make your chair look better is amazing. If a budget is called for, then covering them is the right decision as purchasing completely new ones is very pricy. Chair arm covers can make a bold statement for even less!
The statement that most chair owners are trying to make is beauty and elegance. Sitting in it in a beautiful room may be the most comfortable thing but even if a chair is comfortable the majority of people will not sit in a hideous one. So an obvious question is what can be accomplished by covering the arms of it? The advantages to covering the arms are:
It is very affordable
It will maintain it’s value
Covers can be replaced at any time
The arms of chair are protected from wear and tear
Arm covers can be cleaned and dyed to match a special theme
The beauty and elegance that chair arm covers can add can be the difference between a good room and a great room
When choosing the type of fabric for covers it is vital that a durable fabric is chosen. The arms take the brunt of friction as when an individual sits in a sit it is usually their arms that continuously rub the furniture. A cover can stop those unsightly bulges and dips by covering the fabric and stopping rips.
An important thing to remember in the world of furniture covering is the fit. The same can be said about chair arm covers, they must fit the item both size-wise and colour scheme. So make sure that the items you own are armed and dangerous or if you do not want to be so cliche then protected and beautiful.
Cleaning Fire Smoke Damage Smell
Cleaning fire and smoke smell is one of the most important activities that is required after the fire has damaged your homes and its contents. It is important to take immediate and appropriate action. Carpets, draperies, upholstered furniture and clothing usually can be refurbished after a fire, unless they have been scorched or severely water damaged. The most iportant thing to do is get professional help from a experienced fire smoke damage company.
Smoke odor could remain in clothing, upholstered furniture, carpets and draperies unless it is properly deodorized. Fire restoration professionals and some dry cleaners use a deodorizing process for cleaning fire and smoke smell. They actually break up the smoke molecule to eliminate the odor. This deodorization process is called the ozone treatment. The ozone treatment produces an oxidizing agent that creates the same sweet smelling air associated with a rain storm. The ozone treatment can be done by a fire restoration professional at the home with an ozone generator. Sometimes household textiles are deodorized in an ozone room. If the process is done at home, clothing, upholstered furniture and other textile items are put under a tent while the ozone generator is operating. It is an effective method for cleaning fire smoke damage smell. Clothing and other textile items should be deodorized before they are cleaned; otherwise, the smoke odor could be set in the fabric.
Smoke can enter and remain in and between the walls of the living space. If it is not properly removed, the smoke odor reoccurs from time to time, particularly during damp periods. Therefore, action should be taken to properly remove all smoke odors. Fire restoration professionals can help you in cleaning fire smoke damage smell and eliminating the smoke odor with a process called thermal fogging. This process opens the pores in the walls and neutralizes the smoke odor. There is probably no process a home owner could use that would work as effectively as thermal fogging. If the attic has been insulated prior to the fire, it may be necessary to remove the insulation. Insulation cannot be cleaned; unfortunately, it will need to be replaced because insulation retains smoke odors. Also cleaning the walls and ceiling and painting them is a good idea depending on the amount of smoke damge.
Soiled clothing is cleaned by a variety of laundry methods. Cleaning fire and smoke smell from all clothes with same method is not possible. To effectively remove soot and smoke damage from household textile items such as carpet, draperies and upholstered furniture, it is necessary to use the appropriate chemicals, the right equipment and judgment that come from experience. Properly trained fire restoration professionals have the knowledge and materials to refurbish household textiles after a fire.
The most important guideline for home owners to remember while cleaning fire and smoke smell is not to begin cleaning until the visible soil and smoke odor are removed. In the long run, money can be saved by contacting a fire restoration professional immediately. These experts can be identified through friends whom may had to go through this, or in the yellow pages under water and fire restoration and generally are willing to travel several miles to restore a home.

How to Test My Sofa’s Upholstery Fabric Durability and Strength

When shopping for a new piece of furniture, one of the biggest concerns is inevitably going to be durability; fabric being the “skin” of the piece, its ability to take a beating is undoubtedly the most important factor, especially for high traffic areas. Still, most people have no clue how to go about picking the most durable fabric, and that’s ok! We’re here to help.
First thing to know is, how exactly is a fabric’s durability measured? Most fabrics go by one of two test methods, known as Wyzenbeek and Martindale, to give the fabric an “abrasion” or “double rub” rating. Essentially, the fabric is pulled tight and rubbed in two directions by a standard weight fabric; if two yarn breaks occur, or if noticeable wear is observed, at that point the number of rubs is recorded as the abrasion rating. 30,000 double rubs is considered minimum durability for commercial use; hotels, conference rooms, etc. Between 30,000 and 100,000 is considered heavy duty. Although these tests are only used as tools for predicting wear, it can help when looking at fabrics, to know that the higher the abrasion rating number is, the better it performed on the durability test.
There are definitely other factors to consider, though, when picking a fabric based on durability. Most fabrics come with standard levels of durability across the board, based simply on what they are made out of. The most all-around durable materials are leather and micro-denier (“micro-fiber”). Leather is tough and easily vacuumed, wiped clean, and conditioned for long life. Micro-denier, made of 100% polyester, is extremely tightly woven, making it very difficult for dirt and/or liquids to penetrate its surface, as well as making it very difficult to tear, rip, or pill. Cotton, depending on the weave (canvas is the best!), is also very durable in terms of wear, fade, and pilling, however it tends to wrinkle and will absorb stains; a cotton-polyester blend is a great compromise to help avoid the wrinkling, and a stain treatment can make up for its absorbent properties. Wool, although usually very warm, is extremely resistant to pilling, fading, soil, and fading. A blend with polyester or rayon can make it more skin-friendly. Manufactured to imitate wool, acrylic fibers will not fade, soil, or wear easily, although less expensive versions will usually display a certain amount of pilling after some time of heavy use. Rayon can go either way – high quality rayon can be extremely durable, but be careful when looking for rayon at a very low price – it’s likely to wrinkle and can sometimes absorb water stains. Other very durable fabrics include olefin, nylon, and vinyl; all very good choices for heavy use pieces of furniture.
Among the least durable fabrics are linen and silk. Don’t get me wrong – both can be gorgeous and luxurious additions to a beautiful piece of furniture – but they should probably be used only in “adult” areas, where food and drink don’t go, as they soil (and wrinkle) easily. They both must be professionally cleaned if stained, and will not withstand heavy wear. However, they both breathe nicely, and resist pilling and fading.
Whatever fabric you happen to fall in love with, there will almost always be a more durable alternative. If you want leather but don’t have the time to care for it, opt for vinyl or micro-suede. If you love linen but you need a kid or pet-friendly fabric, opt for synthetic linen (either a cotton/poly blend or 100& polyester). If you love the formal and fancy feel of silk and velvet but you’re not living in a formal environment, try micro-velvet instead. A good piece of furniture should fit your tastes, but it also needs to fit your use of it; make sure you are honest with yourself from the beginning about how you treat your sofa, and it will be smooth sailing!
Secrets to Filling the Punch Bags
If you look on the internet (just perform a Google search on filling a boxing bag) for questions surrounding the topic of punch bags, a vast number of questions are about how to fill a punch bag. The main question people have is what material do I use?
I’ve seen answers given including: “fill it with water” or “use sand” or even better – “grass” – LOL. Water, sand is fine, but it really does depend on the heavy bag and the material the shell was made out of… Trust me, if you fill a regular punching bag with water, you could be in a lot of trouble… and you might need to buy a mop!
You can’t use grass because it will smell. In addition, grass just don’t pack well. The bag will be way too soft. If you disagree, well, do this: Cut your lawn and fill a garbage bag with grass. Try punching it… you’ll get the point.
So for this article, I’m going to tell you what you need to know about filling a boxing bag. And I’m giving it all away based on years and years of experience at both dojos and boxing clubs.
The first important lesson to always keep in mind when filling the punch bags is the outer shell. I’ve had many of my students (unfortunately on a lower budget) come to me saying – what kind of material should I use so my aunt can sew me a bag? My answer – if you want to spend a lot of time & money buying material over and over, then you can do this.
Ok, what about buying a sack? A sack isn’t supposed to be hit with hard punches over and over. It wasn’t made to withstand that kind of pressure. Again, like I said earlier, go this route if you’re wanting to waste time and money. The best thing to do if you don’t want to buy a punching bag that is already filled is get an unfilled bag. They were made to fill!!! Make sense?
And quite often, unfilled bags are cheap… because it’s really the filler for the most part that distinguishes say Everlast from TKO or Aries.
So we don’t have Everlast’s special engineered filler… now what!? The next thing to keep in mind is the strength / stiffness levels of punch bags. Some heavy bags feel like hitting a brick wall… well, to the beginner it may seem this way. Others are like hitting a bag of grass… Well, not that soft (at least we hope not!) but you get where I’m coming from.
There are a variety of different materials you can use to fill a boxing punch bag. Through years of experience filling bags, the hands-down best way, in my opinion, is to fill the boxing bag with a combination of materials.
Here are materials you can use to fill boxer bags with:
* Cotton
* Wool
* Air
* Mattress Foam
* Water
* Clothes
* Saw Dust
* Feathers
* Rice
* Sand
* Styrofoam
* Rolled up and tightly packed garbage bags
* Shredded Tires
Now, let’s bring this together. If you want a good speed bag, fill it with air.. it’s that simple. For heavy bags, this gets a little bit more complicated. I’ll tell you exactly what we used to do with the punch bags at the friendly neighborhood dojo when I was in martial arts school… Just don’t tell anyone I told you.
I want you to look out for something: If you go to a boxing club or dojo, the majority of the answers you will hear from people about filling a boxing bag is to fill it with sand. Sand is I guess you could say, a common filling ingredient… but to people’s dismay, it’s NOT THE ONLY INGREDIENT in the filler. Professionals can get away with filling boxing bags with sand. Sand will make the bag very stiff. If you’re a beginner, no doubt, you will injure your hands.
Here’s what the dojos do… and probably nobody will tell you this about filling a punching bag… it’s very simple! Here it is… short and sweet:
Fill with cloth. Then pack it tight. If it’s too loose you’ll have a deformed punching bag that will be too soft and uncomfortable to hit. The solution?
Use fine sand at the bottom to keep the punch bag essentially a “heavy bag” and keep it’s shape. Fill the outer wall with cloth. Sleep mats or army sacks work very well. Proceed to fill the core of the punch bags you’re filling with a mix of feathers and shredded tires and/or any rubber that’s available.
Camping Tips – How To Stay Dry While Camping
As we start the new camping season its always good to review some tips on keeping dry. Nothing makes a campout more unbearable than getting your gear all soggy! Although most people camp during the summer months when it’s warm and dry there are times during the season when you will get rain. But, fear not! Here are some tips to staying dry that I have learned from my 25+ years camping with the Boy Scouts.
TIP #1
o Did you use seam sealer on your tent? Remember to seal all tent seams on an annual basis. Purchase some “fresh” sealer from a sporting goods or camping store. During your first outing in the spring, re-seal all your seams with a liberal amount of sealer.
TIP #2
o Are you putting a ground sheet or cloth under your tent when you camp? It’s not just enough to put the ground sheet under the tent, you’ve got to tuck the edges under the tent so when it rains the water will not collect on the ground sheet and run under the tent.
So, if your rain fly is installed correctly, the seam sealer holding and the ground sheet properly tucked under the tent you should be go to go! – at least from moisture getting into your tent.
TIP #3
o When inside the tent during a rainstorm, make sure your gear, sleeping bags, mattress, etc. are not touching the tent walls. Why? Well, the tent walls and rain fly are designed to deflect the water droplets off the tent and onto the ground. If you upset this design by putting your pack, sleeping bag or other gear against the wall, water will pool and soak through the tent wall!
I learned this the hard way! I was in a small tent and didn’t realize that my sleeping bag was resting against the tent wall. During the night it rained and I slept through it. In the morning I had a wet spot at the foot of my sleeping bag and a puddle on the floor of my tent.
TIP #4
o When you enter the tent after being out in the rain, take off your wet clothes and put them in a corner or at the front of your tent with your wet shoes. Some tents have a small vestibule that is ideal for this. By using this tip, you will “localize” all your wet gear and keep the other gear dry.
TIP #5
o Bring rain gear or a poncho. Ya, I know that sounds pretty obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many campers are ill prepared for rain. You can get a $2 poncho at Target that will keep most of the rain out. I have a lightweight rain suit, top and pants that I found to be a lifesaver a number of times. In a pinch, you can take a large, green garbage bag; cut three holes in it for your head and arms and it will keep you dry too! I know, my son does it all the time. He’s so fashionable!
If you are prepared and follow these Tips you can enjoy even the most inclement of camping days. It can be fun to be inside the tent play a card game or reading a good book while you listen to the pitter, patter of the rain on your tent. Make some hot chocolate, tea or soup and enjoy!
